Chapter 39

Bryn

I was afraid to believe it could truly be my brother. Having sent him dozens of texts and left nearly as many voicemails, I’d given up on him calling me back.

“Yes, it’s me,” he replied, and he sounded like Zen. The voice was right, but something felt off.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“I decided to take a little vacation,” he explained. “I met a sex demon at The Cauldron a couple of weeks ago, and we’ve been doing some exploring.”

“And you couldn’t call me?” I asked. “Who is this really?”

“It’s Zen,” he replied impatiently. “My phone got damaged, and it took me some time to get a new one because we’re out on an island.”

“Which island?” I asked.

“I’m not sure of the name,” he replied. “Why are you interrogating me, Bryn? I’m allowed to have some fun without being at your beck and call. You need to find a warlock to take care of you because I’m getting tired of having no life of my own while I deal with all of your issues.”

This guy wasn’t Zen. It’s not that I never fought with my brother. Like all siblings, we argued, and he’d even complained about my refusal to make friends or date when we were in witch school. Back then, he’d been enjoying his new popularity, and it had bothered him that I was stuck alone. Those complaints hadn’t been mean-spirited.

“Are you saying I should bond with Niam?” I asked suspiciously.

“Come on,” he began with an exasperated sigh. “Why are you acting like I’ve been pushing you toward Bartlowe? As you may recall, I helped you avoid that situation. Recently, I got to thinking about how alone you are. It doesn’t have to be him. There are other nice warlocks.”

“So, you still think I should stay away from Niam?” I asked, trying to get the imposter to admit to his reasons for impersonating my brother. If I knew his goal, then I’d have a better chance of proving who Zen’s kidnapper was.

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “What you said about him sounded bad, but maybe your tendency to push warlocks away is causing you to look for some nefarious scheme. I’m urging you to give the warlocks around you a chance.”

“Just the warlocks?” I asked. “What if I find a nice werewolf or perhaps a fallen angel?”

“No!” he snapped before taking a deep breath and continuing in a calmer voice. “I miss you, Bryn. I don’t want you to live in the demon realm anymore. Come home.”

He missed me so much that he hadn’t called for more than two weeks, and I didn’t buy his lame excuse. I felt torn on my next move. If I told him the truth, that I knew he wasn’t Zen, I could get Zen killed. I still refused to believe there was a possibility my brother was already dead.

“Why don’t you come and meet me for lunch?” I suggested.

“I already told you I’m not in town,” he snapped before quickly adding. “I’m having a good time, Bryn.
